As news of Nelson Mandela’s death reverberated around the world late yesterday Prince William and his Wife, Kate were attending the London premiere of a new film titled – Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The former South African president’s death was announced as the closing credits rolled.

Then the film’s producer, Anant Singh called for a moment of silence.

A statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation says the announcement of Mandela’s death was handled that way at the request of Mandela’s daughters Zindzi and Zenani – after they had received the news and left the theatre.

As William and Kate made their way out, the Prince paid tribute to Mandela saying he was “an extraordinary and inspiring man.”

Earlier today Her Majesty The Queen was at the spot in Westminster Hall where Nelson Mandela stood to address the British government in 1996.

In a statement, the Queen says she is “deeply saddened by Mandela’s passing and his legacy is the peaceful South Africa that we see today.”

Mandela died late yesterday at the age of 95.

He was being treated for a recurring lung infection.

He developed tuberculosis during his 27 years in the notorious Robben Island Prison.

Condolences and tributes have been pouring in from world leaders.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper told the House of Commons that Mandela’s “long march to freedom ensures his legacy in the world.”

Mandela became an honorary Canadian citizen in 2001.

Mandela said South Africa looked to Canada as an example of openness to diversity.

Harper plans to attend the State Funeral a week from Sunday along with the Queen, U-S President Obama and the Dalai Lama – among other world figures.
