The Metrolinx board has approved a GO Transit fare increase that will add between 35 and 55 cents to the price of a ride beginning on the first of February. The size of increase riders pay will depond on the distance they travel. Riders still using paper tickets will feel the biggest pinch. Along with the fare hike, Presto card users will also get a bigger discount. That means they will see increases of 4.8 per cent, versus about 6 per cent for ticket buyers. CEO Robert Siddal says the increase, along with a $25-million hike in GO’s provincial operating subsidy, will help Metrolinx continue to expand GO with the kinds of improvements that have been added this year. He cited the 30-minute lakeshore GO service, the addition of trips on the Stouffville line, longer trains, four new parking decks and more buses.
