It’s the most money  ever paid for a work by a Canadian female artist -and another record price for a work by the late Emily Carr.

Her painting ” The Crazy Stair,” brought in $3.39 million.

That’s the most ever paid at auction for a Carr painting and more than double the pre-sale estimate.

” The Crazy Stair”  went to an anonymous buyer and helped the Heffel Fine Art Auction House set a sales record in its fall sale yesterday.

Carr was a native of Victoria, British Columbia. She died in 1945 at the age of 74.

Other highlights include Tom Thomson’s painting “Canoe Lake” which sold well above estimate – at nearly $1.7 million.

And a 1971 work by William Kurelek called “Rink Making” more than tripled its pre-sale estimate by going for $163,800.
