It looks like a comet from the fringes of our solar system did not survive a close encounter with the sun.
NASA spacecraft showed Comet ISON approaching for its slingshot flight around the sun today – but nothing came out – on the other side.
In a text U.S. Navy solar researcher Karl Battams wrote ” ISON probably hasn’t survived this journey.”
Still, experts say it wouldn’t be all bad news if the 4.5-billion-year-old comet broke into pieces, because astronomers might still be able to learn more about comets.
ISON had been travelling toward our sun – from the edge of the solar system – for the past five and a half million years.
