Status quo on Parliament Hill.
After four federal by-elections, the parties holding the seats going in held on to them coming out. The Liberals took Toronto Centre and the Montreal riding of Bourassa. The Conservatives held onto two ridings in Manitoba.
Chrystia Freeland held onto the traditional Liberal stronghold of Toronto Centre with almost 50 per cent of the vote against 36 per cent for the NDP.
In fact, it was a big night for the Liberals. They held on to two seats, and went from last place in the Manitoba ridings in the 2011 general election to second place last night, coming within 400 votes of unseating the Conservatives in Brandon-Souris.
The NDP placed a strong second in Montreal, improved in Toronto Centre, but was out of contention in the two Western ridings.
The Conservatives held onto the Tory bastion of Provencher in Manitoba, and managed a close victory in Brandon-Souris. But they were not a factor in Toronto Centre or Bourassa.
