Toronto City Council meetings are often a combative and caustic affair.

Today’s meeting could top them all.

Mayor Rob Ford will be called on to justify why he should stay in office after weeks of revelations of crack smoking, drunkenness, and suspicious activities with his friend Alexander Lisi.

The first item on the agenda is a motion by Denzil Minan-Wong calling on the mayor to cooperate with police in their ongoing investigation into Ford’s relationship with his friend, Alexander Lisi; and to take a leave of absence to seek help.

Councillor Doug Ford maintains his brother is coping with his person issues, and calls Minan-Wong “the biggest opportunist” at city hall.

Minan-Wong was a strong supporter of the mayor, but is considering challenging him in the next election.

Ford is refusing to speak to police about the Alexander Lisi investigation on the advice of his lawyer. Councillor Shelley Carroll says she can’t understand why the Chief Magistrate of a city wouldn’t willingly agree to cooperate with police.

Minan-Wong says, if his motion passes and Ford refuses to step aside, he will propose an amendment to call on the province to step in and remove Ford from office.
