There are questions from the opposition after the latest information surrounding the Senate spending scandal.

Senator Irving Gerstein – the chair of the Conservative Fund of Canada said over the weekend that the party never contemplated paying Mike Duffy’s expenses.

The prime minister’s former chief of staff had earlier said that the party did consider it.

Stephen Harper’s parliamentary secretary Paul Calandra told the Commons that what matters is that the Conservative party did not pay the expenses of Senator Duffy.

Meantime a rift is growing among Conservatives over efforts to suspend Senators Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau and cut short debate about it.

Senator Hugh Segal is opposed to shutting down the discussion and Senator John Wallace is also warning against a rush to judgement.

Wallace says the motions will strip the three senators of their livelihoods and ruin their reputations.
