You may recall a proposal a couple of years ago for bike lanes to run the length of Toronto`s Bloor Street.  The process was stopped in July of 2011 after Mayor Rob Ford was elected on a pro-car agenda.  Now the plan`s been revived.  Members of Toronto’s Public Works Committee have called for an environmental assessment on the effects of bike lanes on Bloor Street between Keele Street and the Bloor viaduct. Councillor Adam Vaughan says it`s the right thing to do on behalf of the residents in that area.  “You go there today, you’ll see more bicycles than cars parked on the sidewalk,” Vaughan explained to CP24, “and that’s because cyclists stop and shop on Bloor Street in the Annex, and we need to accommodate that choice and we need to get those people to and from those businesses safely and we need to get people to and from that neighbourhood safely.  We also need to make sure that we handle traffic capacity in that neighbourhood safely and the only way to do that is to study.”

A decision for Bloor Street bike lanes would require approval of full Toronto City Council next month.  The original plan called for bike lanes to run the length of Bloor Street in Toronto from Kipling Avenue in the west to Kingston Road in the East.
