Lanni Marchant said she was in shock after her record breaking run at yesterday’s Toronto Waterfront Marathon. The 28 year old from London, Ontario set the new Canadian record with a time of two hours and 28 minutes beating the previous record set by Sylvia Ruegger in 1985 by 36 seconds. Lanni was running with her teammate Krista Duchene, but said she felt the need to win. “I saw Krista … and I thought I love her to death but I thought God, I want this but I need it I want it and I have to keep going and moving forward.”
Marchant’s teammate Krista Duchene crossed the finish line 33 seconds later, which also broke the previous record. Sylvia Ruegger says when she set the record back in 1985, she hoped it would inspire other young girls and women to pursue running. She called it a good day for Canadian women and for running in Canada.
