The 3 aging Toronto Zoo elephants are now on the road, being taken to the PAWS animal sanctuary in California.  After 15 hours of delays … Thika, Toka and Iringa began their trip just after 10:30 last night.  Toronto Zoo CEO John Tracogna says there were a series of checks that had to take place before they could go.  “CFIA was on site as the Canadian Inspection Agency taking notes and observing,” he explained, “It just took this long, simply put.  It’s new uncharted area for all of us.”  But PAWS spokesperson Julie Woodyer blamed Toronto Zoo staff for delaying the move by needlessly involving the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Worries over Toronto Zoo staff being unable to accompany the animals south of the border were lifted yesterday as well.  Three zoo keepers joined the animals, following a last minute agreement with PAWS.  Animal activist and former TV Game Show host says there are others taking care of the elephants as well.  “There will be a veterinarian with them every moment and we’ll just hope for the best.  I just personally have confidence that they’ll get here safely,” Barker said on the telephone from California89 year old Bob Barker is paying the $700,000 cost of the elephants’ trip to California.
