FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR US BOOK AWARDS

The finalists have been announced for this year’s US National Book Awards. Thomas Pynchon, Jhumpa Lahiri, Rachel Kushner, James McBride and George Saunders are all well established writers. Pynchon’s “Bleeding Edge” is set in Manhattan around the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Lahiri’s “The Lowland” was a Booker finalist. Saunders’ “Tenth of December” was the rare short-story collection to make-bestseller lists. Kushner is nominated for her highly praised “The Flamethrowers.” and McBride is known to millions for “The Color of Water” and is a finalist for “The Good Lord.” The winners will be announced Nov. 20 at a ceremony in Manhattan. Each winner will receive $10,000.
