A judge has handed down an 18 month jail sentence to a man who was convicted of human trafficking.
The charge was laid after a family nanny was forced to work long hours for little or no pay.
40-year-old Leticia Sarmiento came to Canada from Hong Kong with Franco Orr’s family.
She was paid $500 a month to take care of his three children until almost two-years later she called 911 to ask for help.
B.C. Supreme Court Judge Richard Goepel said the Crown didn’t prove that Sarmiento was subjected to humiliating or degrading treatment, but did prove that the man profited by paying low wages.
Orr’s wife was acquitted on all charges.
Orr’s lawyer says the conviction will be appealed.
