The Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to Francois Englert of Belgium and Peter Higgs of Britain.

They received it for predicting the existence of the Higgs boson particle or ”God particle” that explains how matter attained mass to form stars and planets.

Englert, 80, and Higgs, 84, began coming up with their theories in the 1960s.

They were favoured to win the award after their theoretical work was proven last year in a discovery hailed as one of the most important in physics.
