Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird is scheduled to address the opening session of the United Nations this morning. No word on whether he will make mention of the two Canadians who are jailed in Egypt. Baird says diplomatic efforts to get the duo released have not gone as planned. John Greyson and Tarek Loubani were arrested seven weeks ago during a violent protest in Cairo.
They’ve been behind bars ever since, and yesterday they were ordered detained for at least another 45 days.
The Harper government has repeatedly demanded that in the absence of charges the two be released immediately. It’s a demand has been ignored.
