Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister told the United Nations General Assembly not to be taken in in the apparent change in attitude by the new leadership in Iran.

John Baird referred to the recent thaw in relations between the United States and Iran in the three decades since the hostage crisis of the Seventies. He warned the global body not to be taken in by Iran’s “charm offensive,” saying that “sound bites do not remove threats to global security.

Baird says Iran must demonstrate it is committed to ending its nuclear ambitions and improving its human rights record.

His wide-ranging speech also addressed the continuing threat of global terrorism and the attack on the mall in Nairobi, Israel’s right to live in peace, Canada’s commitment to maternal health, and he called for action to end the practice of the forced marriage of young girls.
