Canada’s Prime Minister is standing firm on moving forward with the Keystone XL pipeline. Stephen Harper told a New York business audience yesterday that political calculations are the only obstacle blocking the project. “My view is that you don’t take no for an answer,” said Harper defiantly, “We haven’t had that, but if we were to get that, it won’t be final. This won’t be final til it’s approved.”
The Prime Minister did not spell out what Canada would do if the Keystone was rebuffed by the U.S. but he did point to demand for Canadian energy around the world and to proposals for eastern and western pipelines. He explained that “if I were an American, the last thing I would want to see is Canada selling its oil anywhere else.” Harper also asserted that the arguments in favour of the proposed pipeline are overwhelming and promised to continue his campaign to win approval for the project until it succeeds.
A final decision on the Keystone pipeline was expected by U.S. President Obama this summer after a review of the project by the State Department. In June, Obama said he would only approve the project if it does not significantly exacerbate the problem of greenhouse gas emissions.
