Mayor, Rob Ford was clearly outraged today as he responded to reporter’s questions about the 75-thousand dollar purchase of 30 replica chairs used in a private lounge at city hall.
But Trinity Spadina city councillor, Adam Vaughn says there’s more at stake here than money.
Vaughn said the replacement chairs were purchased to replace original Warren Platner chairs.
Introduced in 1966, the Platner Collection is an icon of modern furniture design.
City Hall is designated as a heritage site and changes must reflect the original design.
The mayor says the original chairs will be put up for auction in an effort to recoup some of the money spent to replace them.
Deputy Mayor, Norm Kelly says it could be a revenue-neutral transaction because the antique chairs are highly sought after by collectors.
The staffer who approved the 75-thousand dollar purchase is no longer employed by the city, but it’s not clear when he or she left and under what circumstances.
