It was a beacon for music lovers in Toronto for decade.

But, today, the future of the “Sam the Record Man” sign is in doubt.

Ryerson University was given permission to buy the site of the flagship store in the former record chain in the Yonge/Dundas area. In exchange, Ryerson agreed to install the iconic sign in a nearby location.

Now Ryerson says it’s no longer possible. Spokesperson Julia Henningsburg says the deal came together in a hurry. Then the university consulted experts who told them the plan wasn’t feasible.

Ryerson wanted to be let out of its agreement. But a meeting of downtown councillors said “no”. Councillor Josh Matlow questioned whether Ryerson ever intended to honour the agreement.

Councillor Kristin Wong-Tam proposed an amendment that would give Ryerson another year to come up with a spot for the sign, either somewhere else on campus or in a museum. The councillors voted in favour of the amendment, which will now go to the entire city council.
