NEW SCARBOROUGH SUBWAY EXTENSION COULD BE A DECADE IN THE MAKING

The two stop extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line was announced by Ontario’s Transportation Minister this week with great enthusiasm.  But a Metrolinx consultants’ reported obtained by the Toronto Star says it would take 10 years to build the truncated Scarborough subway and five years before shovels even go in the ground.

According to the report, more than 40,000 daily Scarborough RT riders would spend at least three of those years relegated to buses while the $1.4 billion Danforth line extension is build to the Scarborough Town Centre.  It also says subway service would be suspended bytween Warden and Kennedy stations for track work during a shorter, unspecified period.  But Transportation Minister Glen Murray says he’s optimistic the project can be delivered much sooner.  And Premier Kathleen Wynne says the vision is there after much indecisiveness at City Hall.  “There’s been a back and forth about subway LRT,” she explained, “Council decided subway and that’s what we’re building.  It’s the $1.4 billion that the Ontario government is putting in that’s going to build that subway.”

The Scarborough Rapid Transit was originally to be replaced with a seven station 10 kilometre light rapid transit that would open in 2020, but city council has since backed out of its agreement with Metrolinx.
