Jack Layton will be honoured today with a bronze statue on Toronto’s waterfront on the second anniversary of the federal NDP leader’s death.  The statue is a life sized Jack Layton sitting on the back seat of a tandem bicycle.  It’s a gift from the Ontario Federation of Labour.  The idea is for visitors to sit on the front seat and have their picture taken.  OFL President Sid Ryan said in a statement, “no one will miss the significance of Jack riding in the back seat of the bicycle because Canadians know that Jack always had their back.”

The unveiling at 11:45 this morning will coincide with the city’s renaming of the Toronto Island Ferry Terminal as the “Jack Layton Ferry Terminal”.

Layton died after a battle with cancer just months after leading the New Democrats to an unprecedented 103 seats in the May 2nd federal election.  He was 61.
