The debate continues at City Hall on how to replace Doug Holyday.

The veteran  politician will be sworn in today as Conservative MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. That officially creates an opening in Toronto’s Ward 3.

Mayor Rob Ford held a public meeting last night to gauge support for a byelection, which would cost $225,000. Ford says the majority of the 100 people who attended are in favour of going to the polls. He says they’re telling him the riding needs to choose whoever will represent when important decisions are made over the next year.

But others aren’t so sure. Councillor Ana Bailao says her constituents are telling her that the money could be better spent elsewhere, and council should appoint a caretaker.

Council will vote on the two options on Monday.

Meanwhile, the  winner of the other Toronto byelection will be sworn in today. Mitzi Hunter will represent the Liberals for Scarborough-Guildwood.
