Dick Van Dyke is lucky to be alive this morning.
The 87-year-old actor’s Jaguar caught fire while he was driving on a Los Angeles freeway. The California Highway Patrol says witnesses reported the fire yesterday afternoon and said that an elderly man was slumped over behind the wheel of the flaming car.
Van Dyke says he was lucky that some experienced emergency personnel happened to be passing by. A firefighter, a nurse, and a police officer helped to pull the actor out of the flaming vehicle.
Van Dyke didn’t require treatment, but his car was a write-off.
It’s not the first time Van Dyke has cheated death recently. Three years ago he says he dozed off on a surfboard and woke up out of sight of land. He was rescued by a pod of porpoises that pushed his board towards shore.
