The Toronto police officer, who shot an 18-year-old rider on a streetcar late last month, will face a charge of second-degree murder.

The Special Investigations Unit has announced it’s charging Constable James Forcillo.

Director Ian Scott says the SIU has reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence.

Sammy Yatim was shot several times and tasered on an empty Dundas West streetcar.

Nine shots can be heard on cellphone videos that captured the incident, after police shouted for Yatim to drop a knife.

The final six appear to come after the young man had already fallen to the floor of the 505 streetcar.

Yatim’s death has angered many in the city, prompting protests and a debate over police use of force.
