Thousands of Egyptians have taken to the streets in defiance of a government-imposed state of emergency.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the party of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, called for a “day of rage” after Friday prayers to protest against the deaths of at least 638 demonstrators by government forces on Wednesday.

The government has threatened the use of deadly force against anyone attacking state institutions.

World leaders continue to call for restraint on both sides. The UN Security Council met to consider the crisis last night.
