The National Gallery of Canada has a major addition to its collection.

The Gallery is now displaying Le Pont de Bois by Claude Monet. Considered a “significant work,” the painting by the Impressionist master was recently purchased at auction by an unidentified Canadian for $10-million. The buyer then loaned it to the Gallery for an unspecified length of time.

The masterpiece had been owned by a prominent German art collector who died and left more than 500 works to UNICEF. The children’s agency has been selling the paintings to fund its humanitarian projects.

The unidentified buyer is a major supporter of the National Gallery. Gallery executives advised him to buy the Monet, knowing they might be able to add it to the gallery collection.
