When supporters of prime Ontario farmland, saved from a mega-quarry in Melancthon Township, gather this weekend to commemorate their victory, they’ll be joined by a special guest who is no stranger to helping the environment. Renowned artist, filmmaker and environmentalist Bill Lishman is the man who famously used his ultra-light aircraft to bond with Canada geese in flight. Sunday’s event is called “Food and Water First” and will be held at the Honeywood Arena, about 100 kilometres north of Toronto. In 1993, after several years of logistical and bureaucratic setbacks, Lishman successfully led a flock of Canada geese on a winter migration from Ontario to northern Virginia using a low speed ultra-light aircraft. Of the sixteen birds that participated in the migration, thirteen returned to Ontario the following year entirely on their own. The operation became the basis of the French film “Winged Migration” Lishman spoke Wednesday with AM 740’s Dale Goldhawk. For more information go to ndact.com.
