Producers of the world’s favourite soap are putting a dose of opera back into the show. The new season of Downton Abbey will feature a real-life operatic diva playing another real-life operatic diva. Kiri Te Kanawa will guest star during season four, as Nellie Melba, a huge operatic star of the early 20th century, when she joins the aristocratic Grantham clan for a house party. Te Kanawa says she loves the show and couldn’t say yes to an appearance fast enough. She says she enjoyed her time on set so much she named her new dog “Abbey”. The costume drama about the family and servants in an English stately home returns to British television this fall, and airs in the United States on PBS in January. It can be seen in Canada on Zoomer Media’s Vision TV.
