She’s an acclaimed actress, a member of the Order of Canada and a passionate activist against nuclear weapons. Shirley Douglas is urging the federal government to take a leading role in the world-wide movement to abolish nuclear weapons. “Go to the UN, represent the country, be a leader,” Douglas told the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back.
Douglas says Canada should follow the example of the Barack Obama administration in the United States, “and we have to be with him. He’s the person who’s saying, we must abolish nuclear weapons. And I want to start with cutting it a third.”
Shirley Douglas will be the featured speaker this Tuesday August 6th at the Hiroshima-Nagasaki commemoration at Toronto City Hall. The event begins at 6:45pm.
Back in 1945 two atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan by the United States, effectively ending the Second World War.
