The Manitoba government is being criticized for cutting funding to the Manitoba Book Awards. Funding cutbacks have left the organizers with with $8,700 shortfall in cash attached to three prominent literary prizes. That means cash prizes may not be attached to the annual Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction, the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction and the biennial Rue-Deschambault French literary prize. The Association of Manitoba Book Publishers, which co-sponsors the awards, is hoping to get another sponsor or they may have to give out the prizes without the cash attached. Winnipeg historian Allan Levine calls it “pathetic” that the Manitoba government sees $8,700 as a savings. He says Manitoba should be more like Ontario where the government stands behind its Trillium Awards.
