Residents of the Downsview area of Toronto remember well the devastating early morning explosion on August 10th 2008 at Sunrise Propane. Today a verdict is expected in a trial arising from the blast that killed a Sunrise employee and forced thousands of Torontonians from their homes. Lawyers for the Ontario government allege negligence in environmental protection and the training of the 25 year old victim.
But Defence lawyer Leo Adler argued that Parminder Saini did receive training and that the onus is on the deceased and fellow worker Felipe De Leon who escaped the explosion.
Sunrise and its owners face millions of dollars in fines if convicted of violating environmental and labour regulations.
