Wednesday was a day of celebrations in Los Angeles and San Francisco by supporters of same sex marriage. They were cheering the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that settles a five year fight against California’s ban on same sex marriage. The ruling means gay couples can start picking up wedding licenses in three weeks.
There was similar jubilation in New York over a second ruling by the court that overturned a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits to same-sex couples. It was started by 83 year old Edith Windsor, who married Thea Spyer six years ago here in Toronto, where same sex marriage has been legal for a decade. “We won everything we asked and hoped for,” she explained, “I cried, I cried, but I’m thrilled obviously, but the immediate reaction was just tears.”
The couple’s marriage was recognized by New York state, but not by the U-S federal government.
