Supporters of instrumental music programs are celebrating a move by Toronto District School Board trustees to pass a budget without cuts to music education.  After a two hour debate last night, trustees voted to save instrumental music programs and not charge students for the International Baccalaureate program.  An online petition garnered more than 10-thousand signatures to save part-time music instructors.

TDSB chair Chris Bolton says the board will find $10.5-million through “in year savings”.  He explained, “in the past we’ve been able to dabble in sort of the edges of programs.  We are now at the point where the decisions that we make have the potential to affect programs, and what we need to make sure is that we’re doing it in a creative fashion so that we minimize that effect and make sure that the programs are excellent for the learners.”

Bolton says if those savings aren’t made this year, they will be added to next year’s shortfall which he says is predicted to be a 30-million dollar deficit.  The deficit was cut to $27-million from $55-million earlier this year, when trustees voted to cut about 250 high school teaching jobs.  Trustees meet again tonight to complete their agenda.
