David McFadden has been named the Canadian winner of this year’s Griffin Poetry Prize for his collection What’s the Score?

The Toronto poet and author published his first book of poems in 1958. He has written 35 books of poetry, fiction, and travel writing.

The Griffin awards a prize to a Canadian and an international poet. Palestinian poet Ghassan Zaqtan won the international prize for Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me, and Other Poems. His work in Arabic was translated by Fady Joudah of Houston.

Each of the winners takes home $65,000.

This is the thirteenth year for the prize, founded by Toronto businessman Scott Griffin. Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje are trustees of the Griffin Prize.
