A conductor who helped transform Chicago’s Lyric Opera into a highly-respected company has died.

Bruno Bartoletti first conducted for the Lyric Opera in 1956 when he was asked to fill in for an ailing maestro. It marked the beginning of an association that lasted for 600 performances of 55 operas over five decades.

He became artistic director in 1974, and officially retired from the company in 1999.

No reason was given for his death. Bruno Bartoletti died on the eve of what would have been his 87th birthday.
