It’s the largest prize in the world for a novel published in English.
The $135,000 Impac Dublin Award has been given to Irish writer Kevin Barry for his debut novel.
“City of Bohane” is set in 2053 and is described as a comic and violent story of a once-great city – infested by vice and split along tribal lines, where people have their own special way of speaking.
Kevin Barry is 44 and previously wrote two well-received books of short stories.
Nominations for the Impac Dublin Award are made by libraries around the world.
Barry says that makes the award very special because “Libraries are where we learn that we can live our lives through books.”
