The Canadian Cancer Society says ground is being gained on many fronts in the fight against cancer, but one of the deadliest forms, liver cancer, is still on the rise.

The incidence of liver cancer has tripled among Canadian men since 1970, and doubled among Canadian women.

The Society says about half the liver cancer cases in Canada are probably preventable, with lifestyle moderation, use of hepatitis B vaccine and screening and treatment for those at high risk of hepatitis B and C.

Liver cancer claims about four out of every five people diagnosed, in large part because by the time people realize they have the disease, it has progressed too far to respond well to treatment.

An estimated two-thousand Canadians will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer this year and one-thousand of them will die of this form of the disease.

Overall,  nearly 188-thousand Canadians will learn they have a new cancer this year and 75,500 Canadians will die from some form of the disease.
