Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian says she’s baffled that senior staff in the Ontario premier’s office deleted emails related to the cancellations of two gas plants.

Cavoukian says it’s hard to believe they didn’t know they were legally obliged to keep emails on the cancelled gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga -for several years.

The New Democrats asked Cavoukian to investigate after senior staff members in former premier Dalton McGuinty’s office, told legislative hearings that they deleted their email accounts.

The opposition parties say the Liberals cancelled the gas plants to save Liberal seats in the 2011 election, and accuse the government of trying to hide the true costs of the decisions.

The opposition parties say it cost at least $585 million to cancel the gas plants to save Liberal seats in the 2011 election.

Cavoukian promises her office will release its report next month.
