The current strike by members of the International Union of Elevator Constructors that began May 1st continues with no sign of a resolution.

That’s causing problems including for older Zoomers who rely on escalators and elevators to get around.

Carol McLeod lives at the Cencourse Apartments in Windsor a high-rise where the tenants are mostly seniors.

She tells the Windsor Star one of the two elevators there is out of service with no sign that it will be fixed anytime soon.

McLeod says that’s putting a strain on the one remaining elevator and fears it may soon go out of service.

In Toronto  all four elevators in a wing of the Kensington Gardens home on Brunswick Avenue went out service.

76-year old Gillian Leffell, who  has dementia and uses a wheelchair to get around is a resident there.

Her son Jeff, says the striking unions should make exceptions for old-age homes.

Four companies are involved in the negotiations with the union  Schindler, Otis, Kone and Thyssen.

The union says the employer has agreed to a pay hike but will not budge on other issues including overtime pay and travel time.
