The writer of one of Edith Piaf’s biggest hits has died.

Georges Moustaki was a composer, singer and poet. His representative says he died at his home in Nice overnight after a long illness.

Moustaki’s parents were Greek Jews from the Island of Corfu. They moved to Alexandria where Georges was born. The family was drawn to French culture, and Georges moved to Paris in 1951.

A quote from Moustaki on his website reads, “I followed the sun and wind without ever putting a drop of water in my wine. I made every day a feast.”

Georges Moustaki was 79.
