The chief of staff to Toronto’s embattled mayor – has been fired.

Mark Towhey left city hall a short while ago escorted by security.

He did not say why he was no longer Ford’s chief of staff, but said it followed discussions earlier in the day with the mayor.

He said his leaving did not come as a shock.

Towhey refused to say what advice he had given Ford about an alleged videotape that apparently shows the mayor smoking crack cocaine.

Ford has been dogged by the allegations for almost a week, but has said little about them, beyond calling them “ridiculous.”

Meanwhile–

A Toronto city councillor says he registered a warning on a roadside alcohol screening test but is not being criminally charged.

Paul Ainslie spoke today  at city hall, saying he was stopped at a RIDE check on May 3, after having “two or three glasses of wine” while out for dinner with friends.

Ainslie says his driver’s licence was suspended for three days.

He says he decided to come forward, because he saw some chatter on Twitter that claimed he’d been stopped for DUI, which he says “wasn’t true.”

Ainslie said the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of alcohol and said he wanted his constituents to know that such an incident won’t happen again.
