The Metropolitan Opera is disbanding part of its company.
The eight remaining dancers of the Met’s Ballet company have accepted a buyout package and have left the organization.
The company has gradually been reducing the number of dancers in a troop that has been a component of the Met practically since it debuted in 1883. Two years ago, there were sixteen dancers.
General Manager Peter Gelb says dance will always be an important part of the Met’s productions. But it is increasingly working with an eclectic mix of choreographers who often use their own dancers.
