Chris Hadfield is safely back on earth.

The Canadian astronaut returned from his five-month mission aboard the international space station in a Soyuz capsule with two other crew members  touching down in Kazakhstan about 10:30 Eastern Time last night.

During his five-month mission, Hadfield became the first Canadian to command the space station. He also became something of a media sensation, posting comments and photos to hundreds of thousands of followers on twitter, hosting regular video conferences, talking to school children, dropping the puck at the first Maple Leafs game of the season, and recording the first music video from space.

But he didn’t overlook the reason for his being on the station. Hadfield and his crew performed more than 100 science experiments, and also conducted maintenance on the station to keep its systems running.

Hadfield  will be a hard act to follow, and no one is going to follow it immediately. It will be at least three years before the next Canadian astronaut visits the space station.
