Fire safety in nursing and retirement homes appears to be a priority issue for the minority Liberal government at Queens Park.  Community Safety Minister Madeleine Meilleur confirmed this morning  what Premier Kathleen Wynne spoke about the other day.  She explained that sprinkler systems will be made mandatory in homes for older Ontarians as well as people with disabilities.  Ontario Fire Marshall Ted Wieclawek says firefighters now need to work with owners and operators of nursing and retirement homes to ensure they have sprinklers in place, “but also to validate the fire safety plan because sprinkler systems are just one overall component of that fire safety plan.  And they need to ensure that the supervisory staff have enough of them to assist with evacuation and they know what their roles are and to ensure that this comprehensive plan that we’re putting forth actually happens.”

There have also been hints this morning that carbon monoxide detectors will soon be made mandatory across the province.

(Listen for more on these issues coming up after 11am on the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back.)
