Canada’s population has the largest proportion of foreign-born citizens in the G8.

That’s one of the findings of the latest report from Statistics Canada.

But it  comes with a warning that the data may not be entirely trustworthy.

The National Household Survey says Canada was home to 6.7 million people who were not born here. That represents 20.6 per cent of the total population –  up slightly from 19.8 per cent in the 2006 census.

But StatsCan is warning its figures don’t jive with what Citizenship and Immigration Canada is reporting. The agency says the difference may be a result of sampling and response patterns after the Harper Government killed the mandatory long-form census with a voluntary survey.

Doug Norris is the chief demographer at Environics Analytics. He  says the country is stepping into unknown territory with the new voluntary survey.

The report  showed most of the people arriving on our shores were from the Phillipines.
