A man who created stunning visual effects for movies in the days before computers has died.

Ray Harryhausen was a master of stop-motion wizardry who inspired generations of movie-makers.

Harryhausen created his models by hand, altering their positions and shooting them frame-by-frame to create some of the best-known animations in movie history.

His creations include prehistoric dinosaurs for One Million Years BC, Medusa for Clash of the Titans, and fighting skeletons for Jason and the Argonauts.

Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, and George Lucas all said Harryhausen was their inspiration. Cameron says today’s Hollywood science fiction film-makers are “standing on the shoulders of a giant”.

Harryhausen was given a special Oscar for his body of work in 1992. He was 92.
