After a long night of negotiating, a labour disruption has been averted at the Toronto Zoo. “We have a tentative agreement that we will be taking to our members on Monday to vote on whether they’re going to accept it or not”, said Local 1600 President Christine McKenzie earlier today. As of 12:01 this morning, the zoo had been in a legal position to lock out CUPE’s 400 employees, while the union was also in a legal position to call a strike. The Toronto Zoo has been getting ready for a big increase in attendance this year following the arrival of two giant pandas from China. The exhibition is scheduled to open May 18th.
