This will be news of interest to you if you travel out of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport. A proposal for armed special constables to be stationed at the airport on the island will be discussed this Thursday at a meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board. Chair Alok Mukherjee says right now, “the law does not allow special constables to be armed.” He says the provincial government would have to give the Toronto Port Authority special permission to allow the airport’s special constables to carry firearms. The proposal to enable nine of these officers to carry guns was reportedly brought forward by TPA officials in January. Arming them would enhance security at the ever-growing airport and give the constables greater powers of arrest. Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair has opposed the proposal, insisting the risks of an armed special force at the airport island are too numerous.
