In the end, it was no contest. Justin Trudeau is the new leader of the federal Liberal party after taking more than 80 per cent of the available points in the final field of six candidates.
Trudeau told supporters in Ottawa last night that he is humbled to take over the helm of a party steeped in political history. He also promised to unite the party that has spent much of the last few years divided into bitter camps.
Trudeau also says he’s prepared for a campaign of “fear” by the Harper Conservatives, now that he’s been chosen to lead the Liberals.
The Conservatives immediately issued a release congratulating Trudeau on his win, and then accused him of not having the experience to be prime minister.
Trudeau faces his first Question Period as leader of the third party today.
