Britain’s National Theatre is losing its award-winning artistic director.

Nicholas Hytner says he will step down from one of the biggest jobs in the theatre world in March 2015.

Hytner has led Britain’s flagship state-funded theatre company to a series of international successes since he took charge in 2003. His production of War Horse has played on Broadway, Toronto, and other cities; and One Man, Two Guvnors also won Tony and Drama Desk Awards on  Broadway.

National Theatre productions  reached 3.2 million people worldwide last year through movie broadcasts,  generating $122 million in revenue.

Hytner is also a busy opera and movie director. His production of Don Carlo played at the Royal and Metropolitan operas.  Film projects include The Madness of King George and The History Boys.
