TORONTO COUNCILLOR RECOMMENDS PUTTING THE BRAKES ON CASINO DEBATE

There’s a call this morning for a halt to any debate on a casino for Toronto until councillors have all the facts.

A city staff report says that Toronto should receive half of the proceeds the province would earn from a casino in the city. But Premier Kathleen Wynne has made it clear she’s opposed to Toronto receiving any preferential treatment over casino revenue.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming is developing a new funding formula for all cities that host casinos in Ontario. That formula should be made public by the end of the month.

The mayor’s Executive Committee is supposed to discuss the casino concept next week. Councillor Peter Milcyn is a member of the committee. He says he and several other councillors on the committee still haven’t made their minds up. He says it would help them form a decision if they waited for the OLG report before they discuss the report.

As it stands now, City Council is scheduled to debate the issue in early May.
